Key Stats

The Shabbat Project is a global, grassroots movement that unites Jews from all over the world around our shared heritage of Shabbat.

The Shabbat Project was born in South Africa in 2013. South African Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein asked, “What if we could get the entire local Jewish community to keep one complete Shabbat together – from sundown until stars out.

The results were astounding. A majority of South Africa’s 75 000 Jews kept that first Shabbat in full, most for the first time in their lives! Naturally, the experience drew people together – religious, secular, traditional, young and old – in ways never seen before. Images and personal testimonies from that first Shabbat Project in South Africa bounced across the internet.

Soon, people were writing in from around the world, eager to bring The Shabbat Project to their own cities and communities.

The International Shabbat Project – “One Shabbat celebrated by the entire Jewish people across the world” – became a reality.

The inaugural International Shabbat Project, held on 24-25 October 2014, reached an estimated one million Jews in 465 cities around the world. In 2015, The Shabbat Project doubled in size, reaching 919 cities and 85 countries. Last year, those numbers grew to more than 1 150 cities and 95 countries.

The project has become a global testimony for both our need to unite as a people as well as the incredible relevance of Shabbat for today.
